During our 20th Anniversary event, we shared many stories and memories of what has shaped us as a company over the past 20 years and what bonds us together as a Global family. We found it fitting to end the event with a tour of our welding department and demonstrate how we bond a welded-to-length band saw blade. The bond, better known as the weld, must to be as strong as the rest of the blade to keep the continuous loop together.
It starts with an incoming order which generates a manufacturing order. This specifies blade description, dimensions and material to be used for each item. The blades are then cut to a specific length to ensure proper tooth spacing is achieved, welded together using a flash butt welding technique and finished by means of grinding away the weld slag. Sounds relatively easy with a few basic steps but when the details of each step of the process were demonstrated, seeing the quality and consistency put into each blade we produce made it easier to realize that there is a special skill involved.
We at Wikus are proud of the precision and attention we put into our welds. You might say “it keeps it all together”
